Trend Central provides information on Generation X/Y. They compile an annual report on the interests and lifestyle choices of 14 to 34-year olds called the Cassandra Report. I found out about it from a blog entry from a company called Brains on Fire. (I love this blog thing.)
After reading some of the things below do we really think that traditional incentives and recognition have any affect on this "new" audience?
This link gets you to the home page for Trend Central where they have tid-bits of information from the report. Some previews:
Social Awkwardness
Technology is undoubtedly changing how young people socialize; many have been telling us that they often prefer communicating from behind screens because they are more comfortable with expressing their feelings and have more time to think up witty responses. One teen recently told us that she and her friends feel awkward when they finally come together face-to-face.Interactive Productions
A new form of entertainment has been born out of the coupling of personal technology and scripted productions in public spaces. Two examples are “Accomplice” (NY) which is part scavenger hunt, part game, and part theater with actors planted around the city; and “Agora II,” which is an experimental dance performance in Brooklyn that includes the audience by sending them SMS-clues to create specific shapes and movements.
And probably the most mind-blowing...
Personal Libraries
Now that music collections are all in their computers and iPods, young people are telling us that book collections are the new equivalent to CD/record collections, serving as something tangible to hold onto and as a way for young people to display their tastes. It also ties into the Intelligencia trend of people looking for intellectual stimulation and substance.
Who would have thunk that BOOKS would be the new status symbol? And we thought TV would rot their brains.
