I spent a few hours talking to new clients this past week and all of them started the conversation with – "what can you do for me?"

I always find it interesting that clients want to know what I can do for them when they haven’t told me what their issues/desires/wants, etc are.  And it never fails if I try to start with employee rewards and recognition they say – "we do that."  Or if I say we can influence the behavior of their channel partners they say – "we have programs that do that."

Point-Counter Point.  Where do you go?

Cheatsheet
What I’ve found helpful is a cheat sheet that helps a client see the goals they typically have and some of the solutions for each of their audiences.  I’m amazed how many times this simple one-page overview of "ideas" can get the conversation going.

I’m putting it in the files for anyone who would like to download and use as a way to think about your business challenges and how you could more effectively help achieve business goals.

This list is not mutually exclusive or collectively exhaustive – it is merely a starting point for discussion and development.  In most cases there isn’t a single answer – not a single audience – that will contribute to overall success.  It is almost always a blend of programs, approaches and audiences.

It does not address the mass marketing (ie:  advertising) as that is outside my expertise (today.)

Hope it helps!

PS…. spending time with family over the next few days but I’m coming back to this blog with a vengeance after the holiday.  Please, be safe and enjoy whatever family you have – they are truly the only motivation we need!
