Validation Video – Watch and Learn
The day before yesterday I posted that most companies overindulge on recognition. I made the point that what we need to do is validate employees more often (a management task) and save recognition for the really special contributions. That post got a few comments – some supportive – some not.
Today in my reader and via twitter I got a couple of leads to a video called "Validation."
I offer that video here. It's a bit long – 16 minutes. But I think you can get the gist of it within the first 6 minutes. It is right about the 5 minute mark where the best line in the video is said …
"We don't validate."
Sums up most companies perfectly.
Take a look at the video and ask yourself – what is the difference between recognition and validation. The character in the video isn't "recognizing" anyone – he is simply validating and communicating they are special, worthy, important. I think this makes my point on the difference between validation and recognition better than my longish post the other day.
